A live Talk: the tutor asks about the weekend, the learner says “I go to the beach with my friends,” and the correction pops up at the top, “I went to the beach with my friends,” saved to their review.

The Talk

A conversation lesson, not just a chat.

Three to fifteen minutes of speaking with a tutor who adapts to your level. Every Talk has a goal and a few phrases you’ll put to use, and it runs in three parts.

  1. Warm-up

A quick hello, an easy question, and last lesson’s challenge.

  2. Practice

You actually use the day’s phrases, and the app checks each one off as you say it.

  3. Wrap-up

A short scene, plus a report on what you nailed and what to review.

Made a mistake? Keep talking.

The correction shows up at the top, where you can glance at it while the conversation keeps going. And it’s saved to your review.

When you’re done, “How a native would say it” shows you your sentences the way a local would say them, and explains why.

I go to the beach on Saturday

We ate fish for lunch.

We had fish for lunch.

With meals, English speakers usually say “have,” not “eat.”

Review

Your mistakes come back right before you’d forget them.

Every correction from your Talks and lessons goes into your review. Colibrí estimates how likely you are to still remember it (that’s the R on each card) and brings it back just as that number starts to drop.

A card’s R over 26 days. Without review, it drops below 25%. Reviewed on day 2 and day 8, it goes back to 100% each time, and it falls more slowly after each review. 100 % 50 % today 2 8 26 days reviews with reviews without review
Every on-time review makes the memory last longer.

The same goes for the words in your deck. And reviewing your mistakes earns you nectar back.

The Review screen: your corrections with their retention, like “ayer fui” at 66% and “a ella no le gusta” at 89%.

And more

Everything else it takes to speak fluently.

  • Pronunciation, word by word

The lab listens, tells you which word tripped you up and where to put your tongue, and plays model audio at normal and slow speed.

  • Role-play before the real thing

Twenty real-life situations to act out with your tutor before you face them for real.

  • Ask your tutor

Type in any question about the language and get an answer with examples.

  • Stories for days you’re not feeling it

One for every unit of the course, each in its own genre and matched to your level. Read and listen in just a few minutes, and if a word stumps you, tap it to see what it means.

    • Funny story

The story of the day is free. With Plus, you get every story at your level.

  • A pronunciation gym

Quick workouts for the sounds your language doesn’t have. Tongue twisters and Words get you saying them, and “Which one?” trains your ear to hear them.

    • Tongue twistersSlow, at a natural pace, then three times in a row. It listens, tells you which word tripped you up, and times you.
    • Which one?You hear a word and pick which of the two it was: ship or sheep, pala or palla. If you can’t hear the difference, you can’t say it either.
    • WordsSay a word and watch it light up sound by sound: green for what you got right, amber for almost, and coral for what came out as something else, plus what to do with your mouth to fix it. Use any word you like, the ones in your deck, or the ones for each sound.

Works in every language, and in Mandarin, Words also checks the tone of each character. “Which one?” is free and unlimited. Tongue twisters and Words draw on your daily pronunciation checks: 20 free, or up to 150 with Plus.

  • Switch languages anytime

Start a new language without losing your progress in the one you’re on.

  • Your streak on your home screen

A widget with your streak and today’s progress, plus reminders at whatever time you choose.

  • No account? No problem

Study as a guest. Create an account and your progress is backed up, so you can pick it up on another device.

Questions

Who is Colibrí for?

Anyone who wants to speak another language, whether you’re starting from scratch or picking it back up. If you already know some, the level test puts you where you belong.

Which languages can I learn?

Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic, each from A1 to C1, plus English for speakers of other languages. The app, the explanations, and the corrections are all in your language. Mandarin uses simplified characters with pinyin and tones, and you can type in pinyin if you don’t have a Chinese keyboard.

Do I need to create an account?

No. As a guest, you get the full course and the Talk. Sign in with Google or email and your progress is backed up, so you can restore it if you switch devices.

What happens to what I say in the Talk?

Your voice goes from your device to Google’s models, which transcribe it and respond, and it’s discarded when you’re done. We don’t keep your recordings, and Google doesn’t use them to train its models. Each lesson’s transcript stays on your device only, so you can look back over it. Details are in the privacy policy.

How much does it cost?

It’s free to start, and the full course is open. Plus removes the limits and the ads. It’s billed through Google Play, monthly or yearly, and you can cancel anytime.

Is there an iPhone version?

For now, it’s Android only.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Profile, find the Your account section, and tap “Delete my account.” If you no longer have the app installed, follow the steps on this page.

How do I get in touch?
